Welcoming Your New Pet

The Humane Society recommends keeping a new cat closed off in a single room for the first week. The cat will not face the bewilderment of learning his way around the entire house at once, and you will be able to make certain that his litter training is complete before allowing him the freedom of the house.

Other animals and children should be kept away from the new pet in the beginning. If you allow the newcomer to seek you out when he really wants your company, your relationship will begin on a solid footing. Besides allowing him peace and solitude at a stressful time, this method will enable you to determine that the new arrival is healthy before introducing him to new pets.

Good, consistent discipline should be made a part of your pet's life. You will want to teach him his name, where he is to sleep, and other appropriate guidelines for behavior. Begin feedings on a regular schedule so that the security of routine will become quickly established. For a dog, regular mealtimes are especially important, since you will need to initiate a corresponding timetable for walks.

Expect your new friend to make mistakes, especially at first. Remember never to punish him after calling him to you and never strike him. Consistency and patience are the main elements in any successful training program.

All animals have special needs, including your new pet. Be sure to get whatever your new puppy, cat, or small animal will need to make its new home comfortable.

All pets can get fleas and ticks, so learn how to protect your pet and your home from these pests.
