First vet visit

If you have adopted your pet from MCHS, you must take your new pet to a veterinarian within 5 days of adoption. Please click here to see the list of vets that provide MCHS adopters with a complimentary first examination, and/or charge MCHS reduced fees. MCHS encourages you to support these veterinarians.

#2 Reduced cost spay/neuters:

for county residents who obtained their pet from a source other than the county animal shelter

Even if you have not adopted your pet from the MCHS, but you are a Montgomery County resident, there are many veterinarians in Montgomery County that will provide you with a reduced-cost spay or neuter. Fees are based upon your family's income, per Categories 1, 2 and 3 on the spay/neuter application form.

Costs for reduced-cost spaying/neutering are listed on the coupon and vary by income level.

Conditional costs

If the pet is in heat ...  additional $15

If the pet is pregnant ...  additional $25

If the pet is obese ...  additional $25

To apply, please print the spay/neuter application from the PDF file. Mail the completed form, proof of income as required, payment, and a self-addressed, stamped business sized envelope to:

County residents who meet federal HHS poverty guidelines, with a pet from a source other than the Montgomery County Animal Shelter, may apply for a subsidy spay/neuter coupon.

Those who do not qualify may apply for the MCHS Reduced-Cost Program (see option #2 above). The pets of residents qualifying for this program may receive from the veterinarian in addition to the surgery, hospitalization, anesthesia and anesthetic monitoring, a pre-surgical examination, blood work, pain management if needed and vaccinations at a flat fee of $50.00 for cats and $65.00 for dogs.
