Katie Before

Katie After!

Katie, a 6-9-year-old dachshund, arrived as a stray in terrible condition three months ago and was never claimed. She was terribly emaciated, cold, and dehydrated- her ribs and backbone were prominently showing. We speculate Katie’s condition worsened over the course of approximately the last one to two years. If the owners treated her conditions or not, we may never know.
It was bitter cold that night and none of us were sure that she would make it.
She received veterinary care from VCA Veterinary Referral Associates (VCA) and Kenhaven Animal Hospital and daily medical attention, care and love at the MCHS Rescue. With diabetes, pancreatic insufficiency, a malabsorption issue in her digestive tract and nasal and ocular discharge, Katie recuperated at the MCHS Rescue for three months. She used her sweet demeanor and charm to win our hearts!
We are overjoyed to share that Katie was adopted on Wednesday, April 9 by the Lee family of Potomac, MD. Katie joins Ken, Grace and their daughter Bethany along with Scooter, a beagle/dachshund-mix they adopted in 2000 from MCHS. “We are honored to add her to our family,” shares Grace Lee. “With proper attention, exercise, and diet control, Katie will live a long, full and happy life.”
The Lee family will need to monitor glucose levels using urine dip sticks, give daily injections of insulin doses twice a day, and sprinkle Pancreazyme over her food as a supplement to aid digestion. “Although her medical care will continue for the rest of her life, I can say with all certainty that she is in good hands,” comments JC Crist, President & CEO, of MCHS.
The Lee family (Katie and Scooter too!) will be participating at Paws in the Park Wags & Whiskers Family Fun Fair and Pet Walk at Wheaton Regional Park on Sunday, May 18 to help more of our homeless friends recover from medical issues and find “forever” homes. Please join us and bring your canine pals! If you see the Lee family, give them a “high paw” for adopting a special needs dog.
Katie incurred over $4,000 in veterinary bills. Thanks to the kind donations to Joey’s Friends’ Fund from Potomac Glen Day School, The Posh Pooch and many individuals, MCHS was able to pay her bills in full. In addition, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, Katie's medical expenses will be covered for one year after her adoption for up to $150 per month. Your generous support paid for Katie’s medical expenses so that she could be adopted and find a happy ending. |
