My name is Ladybug/Foster and I am a very special chinchilla! In January of 2007, when I was just a little baby, I was left behind in my cage by my owners when they moved. Animal Control brought me to the shelter and a foster came and picked me up so she could care for me in her home.

When she arrived at the shelter she noticed that I had no tail! The shelter did not know what had happened. Of course, I was immediately taken by my new foster mom to the vet. By lucky coincidence, the vet knew me because my previous owner had brought me in repeatedly to treat a problem I had: constantly gnawing at my own tail! This behavior caused the tail to be infected and twice this vet had to amputate sections until I was left with just a little stump. The vet suggested I be euthanized. I was underweight and had an infection at the stump again. I couldn’t help it, I gnawed it constantly.

Food and meds had to be given orally from a syringe several times a day. At first, I gave quite a fight about being caught and handled, and I was not really interested in eating.

The vet and my foster mom suspected that my previous environment caused me to do the gnawing. They suspected it was noisy, chaotic or otherwise overly stressful and this was my dysfunctional coping mechanism. Accordingly, I was now kept in a very quiet room, with few visitors except my foster mom, and most of my cage covered with towels to dampen noise and light. I flourished! The gnawing stopped, I gained weight and the infection cleared. To help me regain trust in humans, after I was better, I had free run of the bedroom for months because they thought I probably had bad memories of my cage too.

Fast forward to now, I am back in my cage and completely fine. You really don't even notice I am missing a tail. I am curious and happy. Chinchillas need time out of their cages regularly, some sources say daily, some say weekly. I am a rodent so you need a safe place to let me out where I won't chew on electrical cords, or otherwise get myself into trouble.

A bit about chinchillas as pets: they are not like cats or dogs, cuddly and “lap” companions. They are friendly, though, and love people and attention. They are little acrobats and will run around like crazy out of their cages, jumping and springing! Their requirements are few: food is mostly fresh hay and hay pellets with occasional dried fruit or oats as a treat, fresh water, a small box or something as a nest, and dust. You buy the dust, it is just for chinchillas and we need it to stay healthy. Being rodents, our front tooth grows continuously so you have to always provide things for us to chew on that will wear it down. I love pumice blocks, twigs from apple trees that have not been sprayed, cardboard and white cuttle stones like the ones that you put in bird cages. My favorite is pumice stones. You buy them as 2” blocks and I whittle it down to the size of a marble!

Our cages do not get stinky. In terms of cages and cleaning, we require less maintenance than a rabbit, guinea pig or hamster/gerbil.

I require a fairly cool room temperature because of my fabulous thick fur. Anything over 80 degrees or so and it is too hot for me!

I will do best in a fairly calm environment without children under the age of 12. An environment with loud music, television or games would not be best for me.

At my foster mom’s there are also cats and dogs, but I am up off the floor so the other pets don’t bother me. I have a spot in a quiet back room in front of a window with a nice view. I cannot be let out of my cage with cats or dogs around – they would see me as prey and try to hurt me. To adopt her, contact her foster Sherry @ 703-216-5946/email skatefast@starpower.net
