What IS Sugar/Foster? That seems to be the question. We've had fun guessing here at the shelter. Sugar/Foster is definitely NOT the golden retriever that her original owner believed she purchased, although she does have a soft golden coat. She is a sweet, adorable 15 lb, 5 month old (as of Jan. 2012) puppy who stands about 12 inches tall at the shoulder. Guesses include Tibetan Spaniel/Corgi mix, cocker/dachshund mix or possibly cocker/golden. Whatever the mix, she is sweet as can be. She is being cared for in a foster home, has started on her shots and will be spayed before going to her forever home. She behaves very well for her age and will be happiest in a home with another young dog to play with. Because of her age, Sugar's adoptive home will have to have a responsible adult home for most of the day to work on her housetraining and puppy mouth-iness. If you would like to add her to your family, contact Kathi @ ksalex1959@gmail.com for more information.

Max/Foster is a 12-pound (and still growing!), 7-month-old Terrier mix who LOVES people and LOVES to play! He’s a rambunctious youngster who is looking for a home that will be able to provide him with a safe outlet for his puppy-exuberance, as well as 24-hour supervision. He gets along GREAT with his foster brother (a silky terrier) and foster sister (a Chihuahua mix), and plays very nicely (although energetically!) with everyone. A sweet and loving boy, he has bonded very quickly with his foster Mom and should bond closely with the lucky family who adopts him. Max is working on his housebreaking and leash-walking skills, and has made TREMENDOUS progress. He also has become a champ at being able to settle and relax while crated for short periods of time. Like most terriers, Max is very fixated on his foster family’s pocket pets, so his adoptive family will need to exercise care with him around small animals. It is unknown how he would do in a house with cats, but it is likely he would chase them so a dog-savvy cat would be highly recommended. If you’d like to make Max a part of your family, please contact his foster Mom, Kate @ ferretfoster@yahoo.com

Meet the wonderful, shiny super-sweetie Bammer/Foster, named by his Louisiana foster Mom, who rescued Bammer right before the Alabama vs. LSU national championship game. Rescued from living the hard-knock life in very poor, rural Ouachita Parish, Bammer is smart enough to know he’s a lucky guy. Less than a year old, Bammer weighs about 20 pounds, and is neutered, heartworm negative, and microchipped. He’s house-trained, crate-trained, loves other dogs, and is curious about cats: he’ll chase them, but then he runs away as soon as they hiss at him.. still very much a silly puppy! Very eager to please, and good with everyone, he brings a lot of love in a small package. A sponsor paid for his vet bills and his transport up to Maryland, where his rescuers hope he’ll find a wonderful home. Could that be you? To learn more, please Email his MCHS foster home @ AWonderfulDog@AOL.com

Andy/Foster is a friendly, very easy-going black and tan Chow Chow/Aussie Shepherd mix. He is 1yrs old, 37lbs, male, and will be neutered before going to his forever home. He is a shy but super sweet boy; giving subtle kisses whenever you hug him. He is well-mannered and gentle even during rough play. He enjoys his walks outside and a good grooming. He is currently learning his basic commands like sit, stay, and down. Andy gets along well with just about everyone- people, other dogs and cat. He has been patiently waiting to go home to a nice family. Location: Silver Spring, MD

If interested, please contact Ming @ 240-200-0747/email adopt@capitalanimalrescue.org

Charles/Foster is a very loving and happy 2yr old tan/white Chihuahua mix. Male, about 7.5lbs, and easily trained. He is friendly and always showing off his affectionate nature. He has been around other dogs and a cat, and gets along fairly well. However, he does not like being around dominate dogs. He enjoys interacting with people and appears to be good with kids. He would make a great companion dog as he always comes and sits by your side. Charles loves to relax and nap after a long walk or play. He would love to find a great family as his forever home. Location: Silver Spring, MD

If interested, contact Ming @ 240-200-0747/email  adopt@capitalanimalrescue.org

Hi, I am Charlie/Foster. I am a basset hound mix. I am about 2 years old and weigh about 40 pounds. I have the adorable basset hound eyes and ears. I am very smart and can easily be trained. I am friendly and love other people and dogs. I love to give doggie kisses to everyone. I live with 2 cats, but they would say I get a little too enthusiastic. I live with my foster brother and we love to run, chase each other and play. Although I have a big bark, I don't use it all that often. I have been neutered and am current on all my shots. I am healthy and haven't had any medical problems. Contact Mary Jane @ 240.252.0712/email mjvillforthsmith@gmail.com
Edison/Foster - I am a 2 year old male brown beagle. I have an adorable face and beautiful brown eyes. My ears feel like velvet. I am still very trim and can be picked up. I love to cuddle on the couch or bed. I am very friendly and love other people, children, dogs and cats. Everyone is my friend. I love to go on car trips and just curl up in the seat until we get to where ever we are going .I would do great in a busy household. I am current on all my shots and neutered. If you would like to add me to your family, Contact Mary Jane @ 240.252.0712/email mjvillforthsmith@gmail.com
Brittany/Foster is a sweet, tiny 8 year old 6 pound female Chihuahua being cared for in a foster home. She is friendly and likes to be held and pet. She gets along with other dogs. She is current on her medical needs and will be spayed before going to her forever home. If you would like to add her to your family, contact her foster Julie @ (301) 680-3611 for more information.
This little puppy is Lizzie/Foster. She is a spayed female about 8 and a half month old (as of 12.23.11) and of mixed breeds. She is a very feisty and dominant but sweet puppy. She is still learning all about obedience, manners, house breaking, and crate training. She does need to be adopted to a home where her family is willing and able to continue all of this training. Her new family must also have experience with dominant dogs, have a responsible adult home 24/7, and not have small young kids. She can not be placed with her sister Lucy or other dominant female dogs. If you are interested in Lizzie please email her foster mom Meg @ luvthemdogs@yahoo.com and use Lizzie/F as the subject.
Juicy/Foster is a nice, active 11 month old female Pit Bull being cared for in a foster home. She knows the commands sit, paw, no, and stay. She gets along with other dogs. She is playful. She will need to be adopted to someone that has a quiet home and pit bull experience with children over 12 years old. She is current on her basic medical care and will be spayed before going to her forever home. If you would like to adopt her contact her foster Richard or Derek @ (240) 388-0098/email ral1@nrc.gov for more information.
Boogie/Foster is a 9 year old male Shih Tzu being cared for in a foster home. He was given up to the shelter because her owners couldn’t afford to keep him. He likes adults, is used to children, and likes other dogs. He is calm and likes to ride in the car. He likes to be brushed and groomed and this type of dog needs to be professionally groomed every 4-6 weeks. He is friendly and has never bitten anyone. If you would like to add him to your family contact his foster Cheryl @ cherylg2715@aol.com to schedule a visit.
Nica/Foster: Nica, a 3-4 year-old female, 14-pound Chihuahua. Sensitive and timid, Nica needs a little time to warm up to people. Whether man or beast, her initial reaction will always be to bark and growl at anyone new. But don’t let that bravado fool you – it’s really a fear-reaction and under that tough exterior she’s a total sweetheart and cuddle-bug! Playful with her sister, Chloe, Nica is fearful of most other dogs. Affection is Nica’s reward of choice – treats will get you nowhere with this little one! Nica walks well on the leash, loves riding in the car, can be a little vocal at times, is fully housebroken, and is completely crate-trained. She is spayed and up-to-date on all her vaccinations.

If you’d like to add this dynamic dog to your home and family, please contact her foster, Kate @ ferretfoster@yahoo.com for more information.

Boss/Foster Wants a Home for the Holidays!

80 lbs of American Bulldog love is in search of an energized, enthusiastic owner who is committed to walking, belly rubs and limitless games of fetch. This two-year old muscle-bound hunk is fixed, up to date on all of his shots and insanely healthy...but he knows he is irresistible so a disciplined, confident owner is required to keep him in check!

His forever home will have to walk him for at least 45 minutes every single day (even when it is cold, even when you are hung-over, even when the Steelers are playing...you get the picture!) so he is a perfect motivator. He is crate trained, friendly to most dogs and has yet to meet a person he does not like but seems a bit too excited about cats...probably best to keep them out of the picture. He is an escape artist so if you plan to let him exercise himself in your nice, fenced in back yard....no chance that we will let him be a part of your future! He’ll take his exercise on a leash , thanks very much, and will give you the opportunity to meet lots of people during your exercise sessions due to his irresistible nature and big, goofy grin. Boss will be best with an experienced dog owner who knows how to effectively walk big, strong critters...if you’d like to arrange a visit, please call Meg @ 240-426-2313.
Codi/Foster, is a sweet, gentle, affectionate, laid back 10 year old female black Labrador, already spayed and microchipped. As she is already house trained and knows her commands finding her a forever home will be simple. She just wants a soft place to lay her head and a mom or dad to follow around loyally through her senior years, although she still is peppy and fun when shown love and attention. She is current on her basic medical care. If you would like to add her to your family contact her foster Kim @ kimro18@gmail.com for more information.

Bella/Foster has had special circumstances her entire life (18 mos) she was brought to the shelter as an underage pup. She was lovingly cared for by her foster mom and adopted to a wonderful family. She lived happily with twin 6 yr old girls, and their parents until hard times came. Bella is back with her foster mom and looking for a new home. she has been loved and cared for and it shows. She is happy, confident, healthy and affectionate. she gets along w/ all dogs. she is smart, quick to learn, athletic.

Bella is 50% Catahoula, 45 % German Pinscher and 5% Whippet, Husky, Collie, American Bull Dog!  She's 55 lbs. & house broken. Bella's challenge is walking on a leash, she needs lessons. She will easily learn when consistently taught how to not pull. Bella's perfect home will be with an active family, or couple or single person. she is very adaptable, but needs daily companionship and training. To keep her mind occupied- training is key.

She could be a great hiking partner, canoeing partner, walking partner, soccer player and she is also a good sleeper. She loves to be next to you while you are on the computer or doing home work or cooking. She's a great watchdog. She will bark when strangers approach the home. Email Elise, her foster mom if Bella sounds like the dog to complete your family. fattylovescake@aol.com
Meet Missy/Foster a young adult Beagle mix. Missy is a sweet girl who is looking for a very special forever home. Missy originally came into the shelter as a stray and apparently pregnant since she had a litter of puppies while at the shelter. She and her pups were lucky to get into a foster very shortly after they pups were born. Missy was a great mom and just about all her puppies, except for Marvin and Elmer, have been adopted. Now it's her turn. She is already spayed, microchipped, house broken, and crate trained. Missy does need a family that does have older or no children and would prefer to be the only dog and have someone home with her most of the day. It would also be best for her home to be a single family home with a securely fenced yard. She is a beagle mix and will wonder away if given the chance so she must always be on a leash when outside or have a securely fenced area to be in. If you are interested in Missy please contact her foster mom Meg @ luvthemdogs@yahoo.com and use Missy/F as the subject. Yes she does have a cute under bite :-)
Koko/Foster is a sweet, 8 year old spayed female Shepherd/Smooth Collie mix being cared for in a foster home. She knows the commands sit and stay. She likes adults and gets along with other dogs. She is active and likes to play catch. She likes to ride in the car and be brushed and groomed. She is friendly and has never bitten anyone. She was given up to the shelter because her owners moved. If you would like to add her to your family contact her fosters Rochelle and John @ 301-762-3864/email Shelley334@aol.com for more information.
This beautiful chocolate colored girl is Cocoa/Foster. She is about 2 1/2 years old and is a mixed Lab. She is very tall and lean with a deep chest so she may also have some sort of pointer or greyhound mixed in there as well. Cocoa is already spayed, house trained, and crate trained. She does also know some commands yet her new family will still need to take her to formal obedience. She is a very, very active dog so her new family will also have to be able to give her plenty of exercise. She must be the only dog in the house but seems ok with cats as long as the family is experienced with dogs and cats being together. She would do best with a family that only has older bigger kids because of her size, strength, and exuberance. Cocoa would love to have a single family home with a securely fenced yard. If you think you are the family for Cocoa please email her foster mom Meg @ luvthemdogs@yahoo.com and use Cocoa/F as the subject.

Jackson/Foster, a 10lb, 12+ yr old neutered male Pomeranian, is a lucky little man. He must be “part cat”, because he’s used up a few of his lives. A police officer found him in the middle of an intersection and brought him to the shelter. While there, Jackson contracted kennel cough and got seriously ill. He was diagnosed Lymes positive, for which he has been treated. Like a lot of pommies, Jackson has luxating patellas, which the vet recommends only treating with joint supplements at his age. He has no mobility issues because of the bad knees.

This happy little dog has gotten past all of that and has tons of character. Jackson/F gets along with the other dogs in his foster home, but needs to be introduced slowly to new dogs. He occasionally chases the cats … but he will never catch one! We would prefer a home for him without young kids because of his size and age. Email ksalex1959@gmail.com for more information.

Lilly/Foster is 14 years old. Lilly has a grade 4 heart murmur, on a scale of 1-6 She also has an arrhythmia and some dementia. She is house broken, but cannot last thru the night and wears a diaper, which is soaked by morning.  She is sweet and shy and weighs 7 lbs. she is affectionate. She gets upset in the crate and whines and scratches. She is a clingy dog and needs to be with a person most of the day.  She would be a good match for a single person or a quiet household with some one home during the day.  She is a poodle and this means regular grooming every 8 weeks at the cost of $60 approximately. She is currently not on any medication for her heart ailment, because she has no apparent symptoms.  Thank you for considering a shelter dog.

If you would like to visit her to possibly adopt, contact her foster Elise @ fattylovescake2@gmail.com for more information.

Sasha/Foster is in the foster program for Montgomery County Humane Society, www.mchumane.org Sasha/Foster is a 2-3 year old Akita mix who will not make a good first dog. She is a very smart and loyal dog, who unfortunately was given a really bad start in life.  Left out in a yard and unsocialized, she came to the shelter very scared and pregnant.  She has since successfully had a litter of six beautiful puppies who have all found their way to wonderful homes.  Now it is her turn to find the forever home that she deserves.  Sasha/Foster does very well with other non-dominant dogs, as she currently is in a home with 3 other dogs.  They have been her role models, and have helped her to adjust to living in a home.  Once Sasha/Foster warms up, she is calm, mellow and playful.  She loves all sorts of toys (especially her food cube!) and romping with the other dogs in our home and neighborhood. Sasha/Foster needs a special calm, single family adult home hopefully with a well mannered doggie friend or two.  Sasha/Foster is still working on overcoming her initial fear of adults, and children.  She will need someone to help her continue her positive training, as she is scared and nervous in new situations.  Experience with larger dominant breeds such as Huskies, Shepherds, Akitas and Rottweilers is a plus!  Sasha/Foster is housetrained, crate trained, and also responds to sit and lay.  She is working on leash training, and yard boundaries.  If you think you can provide a great home for Sasha/Foster, have a single family detached home, no young children, live within a 2 hour radius of Rockville, MD and are willing to continue her training please give Kevin a call @ (301) 908-5889 or email kandersn20@gmail.com Sasha/Foster is up to date on all her shots, heart guard, flea/tick, microchipped and altered.  Thank you for rescuing a dog and giving them a great new start in life.
