The Foster Adoption Process

Visit with the pet you are interested in adopting.

Fill out an adoption application. The more information you can provide on the application the quicker the process.

All family members will need to visit with the animal before the application is processed.

The adoption desk will complete the application process in about 5-7 days. They will call the vet and make sure any current pets you may have are up to date with a rabies shot.

If you are renting, they will confirm with the landlord that pets are allowed and what the pet deposit will be.

The application will be assigned to one of our adoption counselors for an interview. If you are adopting a dog, a home visit will be conducted. If you are adopting a cat and have never owned a cat before, a home visit will be conducted. If you are adopting a cat and have had a cat before, the adoption counselor will most likely do a phone interview. This will be up to the discretion of the counselor. They still might choose to do a home visit.

Once the Adoption Counselor completes your interview, they will let you know whether or not you are approved. If you are approved, the adoption desk will contact you to set up a time and day for you to come in to sign your adoption contract and take your new friend home.

Question about the status of your application? Contact 240.773.5965, adoptiondesk@mchumane.org
