Tips

Don't give your pets chocolate –- save the sweets for your human sweetie. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats and can be fatal. Keep all chocolate is out of reach of your pets.

How much can kill? The American Animal Hospital Association says four to 10 ounces of milk chocolate, or one-half to an ounce of baking chocolate, can kill a small dog like a toy poodle. For medium-sized dogs, such as a cocker spaniel, one to one-and-a-half pounds of milk chocolate, or two to three ounces of baking chocolate, can be fatal. And for large breeds, two to four-and-a-half pounds of milk chocolate, or four to eight ounces of baking chocolate, can kill.

Giving flowers? -- Tell your florist to skip the lilies if you or your heartthrob have a cat. Take a minute when the arrangement arrives to remove other potentially deadly flora on the ASPCA’s list. De-thorn roses or other stemmed flowers with sharp, woody spines -- far away from where your pets might inadvertently bite, step on or swallow these pointed spears that fall on the ground.
