Policy

The Montgomery County Humane Society, Inc. (MCHS) is committed to ensuring the public health and safety of all Montgomery County citizens and their domestic pets.

MCHS will adopt American Bull-Type Terriers (includes Staffordshire terriers, American Bulldogs, and mixes) to applicants who rent their homes; however proof of landlord permission must be provided. If an applicant lives with his/her parents, then the parent must adopt the dog. Pit bulls and mixes will not be adopted to residents of Prince George’s County, Baltimore City or any other jurisdiction where pit bulls are not allowed.

Current pit bull owners wishing to adopt a second pit bull must have the current dog evaluated by an MCHS staff member. The dog must pass this evaluation.

MCHS requires that all pit bulls and mixes, regardless of age, be sent out for spay/neuter prior to placement:

1. MCHS will deliver the dog to the veterinarian for surgery.

2. The new owner will pick up the dog from the vet after surgery is completed.

3. The new owner is responsible for paying the vet bill for any cost over and above the cost of the spay/neuter coupon purchased from MCHS at the time of adoption.

4. The new owner’s current dog must be altered.

Applicants will have a three-step interview:

1. an initial screening and verification of application information

2. a home education interview and inspection

3. a discussion of obedience training

Obedience Classes Are Mandatory!

1.  proof of enrollment and payment (if fees apply) are required

2.  proof of successful completion must be provided

Adopters must contractually agree to be available for a minimum of three post-adoption checks by MCHS interviewers.
